About Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary:

The Kalakkadu wildlife sanctuary is located in the beautiful hills of the Western Ghats, covering an area of 223 sq kms in the Tirunelveli District. The sanctuary along with Mundanthurai sanctuary together form the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. For tourists desirous of visiting the sanctuary, the ideal time should be anytime between September to March.

Animals & Birds in the Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary Tours

Wildlife seen in the sanctuary includes Tiger, leopard, Lion Tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque and common Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, wild dog, sloth bear, elephant, spotted deer, mouse deer,lion tailed macaque, brown mongoose and malabar giant squirrel.

Close to 100 species of birds can be spotted in the Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary creating a beautiful environment for a bird watcher. Some of the species include emerald dove, minivets, bee caters, quails, egrets, herons, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridge, sparrows and night jars

The flora ranges from forests of tropical wet ever-green to Tropical dry deciduous and thorn forest at down hills.

Trekking in the Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary

A number of adventure activities can be enjoyed in the Kalkad wildlife sanctuary. Trekking is one of them, and perhaps the most popular one. Trekking can be done with prior permission from the Forest (Wildlife) Department. There are 24 marked out trek routes in the sanctuary anf travellers can choose from anyone of them for thier trip.

How to Reach Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary

Thiruvanantpuram International airport, at a distance of 140 kms, is closest to Tirunelveli whereas Cheranmadevi and Ambasamudram railway station, at a distance of 20 and 15 kms, are the nearest railway station.
